Implicit and Explicit Processes in Social Cognition
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this review we consider research on social cognition in which implicit processes can be compared and contrasted with explicit, conscious processes. In each case, their function is distinct, sometimes complementary and sometimes oppositional. We argue that implicit processes in social interaction are automatic and are often opposed to conscious strategies. While we are aware of explicit processes in social interaction, we cannot always use them to override implicit processes. Many studies show that implicit processes facilitate the sharing of knowledge, feelings, and actions, and hence, perhaps surprisingly, serve altruism rather than selfishness. On the other hand, higher-level conscious processes are as likely to be selfish as prosocial.

Face puzzle—two new video-based tasks for measuring explicit and implicit aspects of facial emotion recognition
Recognizing others' emotional states is crucial for effective social interaction. While most facial emotion recognition tasks use explicit prompts that trigger consciously controlled processing, emotional faces are almost exclusively processed implicitly in real life. Recent attempts in social cognition suggest a dual process perspective, whereby explicit and implicit processes largely operate ...
متن کاملStudy of Explicit Knowledge Effects on Implicit Motor Learning in Older Adults
Objective: The motor skill performance and learning in older adults are of a great importance. The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether older adult’s explicit knowledge effect on implicit learning and motor performance and which are typical for rehabilitation and skills acquired in older adults. Materials & Methods: In this comparative study a serial reaction time task by u...
متن کاملRight Hand Preference in Implicit Motor Learning in Children with High-Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome
Objectives: Cerebral hemispheres functioning have been found to be abnormal in children with ASD. The role of lateralization in implicit and explicit motor learning has received little attention in ASD researches. The main goal of this study is investigating the differences between two hands implicit and explicit motor learning in children with ASD and typical matched group. Methods: In the ...

Williams, Watts, Macleod and Mathews' (1988) model of anxiety and depression leads to the prediction that anxious patients will show mood – congreuent implicit memory bias, while depressed patients will show mood-congruent explicit memory bias.Although this prediction has been supported by some researchers (Denny & Hunt, 1992 mathews, Moog, et al , 1989 watkins, et al, 1992), the reliability ...
متن کاملWhy do implicit and explicit attitude tests diverge? The role of structural fit.
Implicit and explicit attitude tests are often weakly correlated, leading some theorists to conclude that implicit and explicit cognition are independent. Popular implicit and explicit tests, however, differ in many ways beyond implicit and explicit cognition. The authors examined in 4 studies whether correlations between implicit and explicit tests were influenced by the similarity in task dem...
